It has been a hectic week for aviation, and it’s only Wednesday.
After Sriwijaya Air’s flight SJ182 crashed into the Java Sea on Saturday, shattering on impact and leaving no known survivors, rescue teams were working around the clock to find the black boxes so that they could find the cause of the accident.
Following a couple of snags in the search, including a broken locator, they have since managed to retrieve the black boxes and will be shipping them back to Jakarta for analysis.
In South African news, a report compiled by the Civil Aviation Authority detailed the findings of an investigation into the FlySafair Boeing 737-400 that lost cabin pressure in November 2020, leaving several passengers bleeding from the nose, and in pain.
Then there’s this absolute boss in Pretoria who managed to land his Safari LSA next to the N4 on Monday, following an in-flight emergency:
If that video doesn’t work, you can watch it here.
TimesLIVE spoke to Civil Aviation Authority spokesperson Kabelo Ledwaba who says that pilot, who was not injured, was the only person on board the plane which took off from Kroon Airfield and intended to land back at the same airfield.
“The evidence collection phase has already begun and will determine the size and scope of the investigation, as well as the anticipated time frame for the completion of a final accident investigation report,” said Ledwaba.
“It is vital to point out that investigations can vary in complexity and may at times take a bit of time to complete.”
He reckons a preliminary report will be issued in roughly 30 days.
While it isn’t nearly as impressive as the emergency plane landing on along Interstate 35W in Minnesota, it’s still a job well done.
