Let’s Close Out 2020 With The Year’s Best Memes

We knew this already, but 2020 has certainly confirmed that in tough times, memes can provide some comfort to us all.

Sorry to be that person, but today is our final workday of the year.

I really, genuinely hope that you’re also close to wrapping things up, because the sooner we can all put this year behind us, the better.

One thing 2020 has taught us is that South Africans often turn to humour to help us through tough times – remember President Cyril Ramaphpsa and that mask incident?

Simpler times, man.

Anyway, 2020 has been another bumper year for memes, and we thought we would run through a few ‘best of’ lists.

If you’ve watched The Last Dance, the picture of Michael Jordan up top might make sense, but we’re moving along to the real good stuff.

Let’s start with Mashable, and one of my favourites – Nature is healing, we are the virus:

As people around the world stayed inside to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus, images of “nature healing” without human intervention emerged online. Viral images of elephants grazing in fields and dolphins frolicking in Venice’s canals, paired with messages about how humans are the problem, are pretty much just eco-fascism.

The phrase “Nature is healing, we are the virus” were paired with absurd photos of abandoned cities for a more whimsical take on the meme.

See Mashable’s full list here.

Next up is Reader’s Digest (yep, still a thing), with How it started  / How it ended (or how it’s going):

‘It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss’.

‘Mr. Brightside’, guys. Come on.

Read more on that meme here.

We gotta talk about the Tiger King memes, right? This from the New York Post:

In late March, when COVID-related shutdowns had just begun and we all became house cats, it offered the blessing of a much-needed distraction — which drove its viewers to a speedy obsession. Those with quick ideas — and a lot of extra time on their hands — quickly pounced.

Then there was the LinkedIn / Facebook / Instagram / Tinder Challenge (also dubbed the Dolly Parton Challenge by many).

[She] made a big impact on social-media with the Dolly Parton Challenge, which became one of 2020’s most viral hits, according to Instagram.

The four-picture collage, which she captioned “Get you a woman who can do it all,” showed four different photos of her separated by the sites for which they’re most appropriate. A family-friendly shot of Parton in a Christmas sweater was labeled “FACEBOOK,” while another from her 1978 Playboy shoot in a bunny look says “TINDER.”

Here’s her original post that set the wheels in motion:

Oh, just a few snaps I had lying around.

Can we call it a day there?

If you want more memes, here’s another great list to check out. Oh, wait – another list to the face.

We have almost made it through 2020. Well done, us.
