Spending R100 000 a month on a rental property, in a month with 31 days, equates to R3 226 a day.
That’s around R134 per hour, so if you watched an Arsenal game recently, and we include the 15-minute halftime break, you wasted your time and about R235.
There’s no real point to be made here, other than the fact that I felt like getting in a dig about Arsenal.
Pam Golding recently launched a digital edition of Exquisite, which is a collection of some of the most prestigious properties in South Africa, and there are some interesting comparisons to be made.
Rather than letting you slog through those 140 pages, we’ll make it easy and compare two prime rental properties, one in Tokai’s Steenberg Estate, and one in Hyde Park, Sandton.
Both are listed as R100 000 a month, and given that we’ve featured the Hyde Park residence as the main image above, we’ll start there.
The listing says the three-bedroom home is “The Epitome of Charm and Elegance”:
Classic, Stately, Traditional Home – enchanting with an ambiance of refined grace and elegance, privately situated and hidden in a 24-hour guarded housing estate.
An invitation to a charmed life of understated refinement embraces one from the quadruple volume entrance with sweeping staircase (bespoke handcrafted ironmongery) through to the gracious double volume reception areas.
These consist of formal lounge, ambassadorial dining room, comfortable family room leading to expansive bespoke handcrafted pub/bar opening to indoor /outdoor patio all opening to pool and verdant green garden.
I feel like the pictures might not do the place justice. You can see the rest here.
Let’s head to Tokai, and the Steenberg Estate, for our second property.
The listing for the four-bedroom home says perks of living on the golf estate include being in close proximity to wine farms, mountain walks, shopping centres, and leading schools in the area.
Rather than rifling through photos, let’s check out this video:
A pretty decent place to rest one’s head.
See the full Steenberg listing here.
I won’t say which home I’d prefer, but I will say that a bond of R100 000 a month can buy you something pretty tidy, too.
Good luck keeping those payments up for years on end, though.
