There are positives and negatives to be taken from the video you’ll watch below.
It’s tragic that we live in a country where criminals feel emboldened enough to rob people in broad daylight, with little fear of ever being caught.
On the flip side, props to the heroic residents who responded to help the woman who was under attack, tackling the mugger to the ground and ensuring he didn’t get away.
Here’s the CCTV footage that did the rounds last Friday, showing the quick reactions of a number of Parkhurst, Johannesburg residents.
A warning that it does contain violent content:
Well done to the Parkhurst community for apprehending that bloody thug. pic.twitter.com/YQ4HTuKGkn

Pay particular close to attention to the tackle put in just after the 30-second mark, which exhibited fine technique.
In reply to the tweet above, the aptly-named user Rugby95 said:
Thanks for sharing the video and message. The lady is fine. The attacker appeared in court this morning. I made the tackle and am feeling slightly peppered up but I’m glad we could get a criminal off the streets…
He was crying like a lil child once we took him down. We need our men to not be afraid of these thugs. Our women and children need us to be brave to make our communities safe
In response to somebody asking how the woman who was mugged is doing, he said “Traumatized but she’s a strong woman, she’ll be alright.”
It’s unclear that the next step of the legal process is, but here’s hoping justice is served.
