After a sustained period of refusing to play ball, Cape Town has finally ticked over into summer.
We know this for two reasons.
Firstly, 2oceansvibe declared summer open last week, although we had to break from our usual protocol to do so.
Secondly, the wind has been pumping for a few days straight, and whilst that it tends to happen at various stages of the year, it’s certainly a Cape Town summer feature.
We have the mountain, the sea, and beautiful beaches, so there has to be some trade-off.
On that last point, if you’re a fan of our beaches, and catching the odd wave, then you’ll dig the Surfscapes Art Exhibition.
Part of the Wavescape Surf and Ocean Festival, the art exhibition takes place tomorrow evening (Saturday, December 5) between 7PM and 9PM at The Shred Indoor Skatepark, 68 Auckland St, Paarden Eiland.
It will feature an exhibition of original oil paintings on old wooden skateboard decks, depicting favourite surf spots around Southern Africa – some with a twist.
These paintings are the work of Craig Cockcroft, who’s a master at perfectly capturing the essence of our coastline’s most iconic locations:
If you’re headed to the exhibition on Saturday, please bring along those old, dusty, broken, and unwanted wooden skateboards or decks and “donate-a-deck” towards revival, repurposing and art.
You’ll find all the details of Saturday’s exhibition here.
Via Craig’s Instagram account, here are just a few of the surfscapes he’s painted:
Any of those would look good hanging on the wall above your boards, but how about an archival A2 framed print on premium paper of the 2OV Camps Bay Surfscapes, painted by Craig himself, and worth more than R6 000?
If you’ve ever sat at Café Caprice on the Camps Bay strip, with palm trees and the sun setting in the background, you’ll know that surfscape well.
Here’s how you enter the draw for that prize:
The winner will be announced on January 27.
Before you ask, yes, you still score that free ice lolly with each pizza, too.
Smash the pizza, lolly for dessert, and a lekker custom Surfscapes painting hanging from the wall.
You’ve done well.
