Did you feel that tremor? Well, we’ve got some answers.
Spling is hosting a watch party turned movie night festival for Jurassic Park on Saturday, November 28, at Go Drive In in Cape Town and online via Showmax from 6:30PM.
You can follow /SplingMovies on social media or use the Live Event Tracker to stay tuned as links drop on the night.
Social distancing inspired South African movie critic, Stephen “Spling” Aspeling, to launch and host Bingeing with Spling. The watch party series may have been born in the stay-at-home age, but Spling doesn’t see it as a lockdown or once-off thing… now onto the sixth Bingeing with Spling event.
Described as the “best movie night in… ever” by one fan, he’s hoping to make it a regular and much-anticipated on-going monthly thing.
Join from Anywhere
The Bingeing with Spling watch party series is similar to what the Academy is doing, where they invite a few special guests to join a Twitter live commentary style screening on a select streaming platform. The difference is that Spling is curating a much broader event that includes: music performances, a curtain-raiser short film, special features and interviews with esteemed guests.
While the watch party is based in South Africa, there’s nothing stopping anyone from just about anywhere from joining in. All you need is an internet connection, a screen, access to the main feature and a smartphone to tweet along! The biggest new feature is that the watch party will also take place at Go Drive In in Cape Town, where you can also enjoy their VR arcade or grab a bite to eat from a wide selection of food trucks.
The Main Feature
Jurassic Park is a film that conjures up a lot of nostalgia for people who first witnessed Steven Spielberg’s brilliant sci-fi adventure. The visual effects have aged well and this modern classic has spawned a reboot series in Jurassic World starring Chris Pratt. It’s also interesting to note just how well the original cast have fared with Laura Dern going from strength-to-strength, Sam Neill doing some of his best work and Jeff Goldblum becoming more Goldblummy. The original Jurassic Park is still worth watching and what better way to go back to the future than at the drive-in theatre!

Special Guests
Beyond the main feature, Spling has several special guests lined up. Joining in the watch party and going behind-the-scenes with exclusive interviews, you’ll be able to get the story from Jurassic Park megafan turned gaming kingpin, Grant Hinds, and hear from a real-life Indiana Jones in paleobiologist, Prof. Jonah Choiniere!
The watch party opens with John Bartmann’s creative rendition of the Jurassic Park theme and will be followed by Colin Trevorrow’s short film, Battle at Big Rock.
How to Get Involved
Beyond the jam-packed movie line-up, special features and exclusive interviews, Spling will introduce the event, serve up cool movie trivia and get people chatting on Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp with live commentary and movie games.
You’ll be able to win prizes, engage with special guests and enjoy movie banter with other attendees. The best comments of the night will make the round-up on Monday and you can stand a chance of winning a prize by simply using the hashtag #BingeingWithSpling on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram on the night!

Bingeing with Spling is all about movies and fun, so invite your friends to join you online or at the drive-in if you’re in Cape Town, dress up for the occasion, get the popcorn popping and make it a brilliant night, whether you’re watching from the couch or a car seat!
