I’ve been praising the ‘bean to cup’ lifestyle for a while now – ever since I got a JURA coffee machine. You know, the one with Roger Federer.
Sadly, that sexy piece of kit (the coffee machine, not Roger) won’t be at home for much longer, as it was bought for the newly launched ‘Caracal’ – to add to the luxury off-the-grid experience at Cabine du Cap.
So I set about doing the sums to justify getting another one for home, as I am loath to dust off the planet-killing Nespresso machines. You know, the one with George Clooney.
Before we crunch the numbers, here’s Roger in action with his JURA machine:
Who wouldn’t want to have one of those around the house?
I did some research and it seems the average espresso shot is 7,5 grams, making a double shot 15g.
The majority of people out there are drinking double shot drinks – like Americanos and Cappuccinos. I’ve become something of an Americano man these days, mocking those milk-heads and relishing in my pure black sophistication.
I’m hitting around three of those a day, so let’s call it 45 grams. Which, over a month, is 1,35kg. If a one-kilogram bag of Terbodore Coffee costs R295, then I’m consuming the equivalent of R398,25 a month. Call it R400.
Compare that to Nespresso, which at roughly R10 a capsule, would take my little habit up to R900 a month (90 cups). That’s a R500 saving, or R6 000 a year. But there’s two of us drinking similar quantities in my home, which makes it a grand a month saving, or a full R12 000 a year!
Come now.
That kind of saving pays off a JURA machine in just over a year. Or you could rent one – Aquaspresso has a range here, with prices for purchase and rental on each machine.
For those keen to splurge, you could pay off a swanky DeLonghi machine in eight months. Yuppiechef has eight machines, ranging in price from R8 249 through to R27 959.
It’s all five-star reviews on the Caffe Venezia 1350W, baby:
Still too much? Check out these Bialetti and Aeropress options at Terbodore, which start from as little as R670.
Finally, is there anything better than winning free stuff? No, there isn’t.
Terbodore is currently running a competition, with the first prize being a SMEG Filter Coffee Machine and a year’s supply of Terbodore Coffee (4 x 250g Terbodore coffee packs of your choice every month).
I’ll let you work out how much money you’re saving a year with that one.
Life’s too short for shit coffee, man. Bean-to-cup is the way to go. The planet likes it, too.
