Conversations about systemic racism in schools have been reignited after an unofficial matric dance at Brackenfell High School caused outrage, leading to protests by the EFF.
With the fallout, violence, and chaos that has ensued since a video of the event first circulated, it seems likely that other schools would want to avoid a similar scandal at all costs.
While Brackenfell High braces for another showdown today, Table View High School is doing damage control of a different kind after someone used the school’s name to create a fake account on TikTok, featuring some incredibly racist content.
News24 reports that the Western Cape Education Department says that the account attempted to use the school’s name, and also attempted to allegedly impersonate a 15-year-old student at the school.
The post is appalling:
In the comments below the post the content creator claimed to be the school principal:
The school has strongly condemned the account, distancing themselves from it in a post on their Facebook page:
Education Department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond says that the parents of the student who was allegedly impersonated on TikTok have “submitted the learner’s phone to the police and have opened a case of defamation of character”.
Arrangements are being made with a digital forensics company to remove the content from the web.
“It is concerning that ‘someone’ has allegedly impersonated an account of a child, and impersonated an account of the school, which never existed, with the intention to maliciously sow seeds of division, hatred and racism, and cause harm to a minor and the integrity of this school, ” Hammond added.
An investigation to uncover the culprit is underway.
