Arriving at work drunk or stoned isn’t going to do you any favours, unless, as the case seems to be, you’re starring in a Hollywood blockbuster.
For a number of celebrities, a little tipple or a few puffs were central to some of their most iconic performances, or if you’re Seth Rogen, central to absolutely everything that he does on and off-screen.
BuzzFeed put together a comprehensive list of actors and actresses who took method acting too far, were still drunk after a night of partying, or needed a little liquid courage to make it through tough scenes.
We picked our top five craziest scenes filmed under the influence.
Kirsten Dunst had no idea she was smoking a real joint while filming a scene in Woodshock.
In the film, the characters smoke a lot of weed, which Dunst told Jimmy Kimmel was “movie pot” or “pot made with herbal tobacco”.
However, after filming one scene she felt a little weird, and upon investigation, one of the producers discovered that a real joint had found its way into the pile of fake ones.
Billy Bob Thornton was super drunk while filming a key scene in Bad Santa.
Thornton told PeopleTV’s Couch Surfing that he started his day before filming the ‘drunk at the mall’ scene, where he attacks a decorative donkey, by drinking three glasses of red wine, vodka and cranberry juice, and then a few Bud Lights.
“By the time I got to that scene there, I barely knew I was in a movie,” he said.
Margot Robbie needed some liquid courage while filming The Wolf of Wall Street.
One of the very first scenes that Robbie had to film for The Wolf of Wall Street was the one where she stands naked in a doorway.
“I’d come to work that morning and I was shaking, so scared, like, ‘I can’t do this.’ So, even though it was 9 a.m., a crew member hooked her up with some tequila.
“I did three shots and then took my clothes off and did the scene and I was fine. It really helped stop my hands shaking, and gave me a little boost of confidence.”
You can watch that scene here.
The drunken breakdown Martin Sheen’s character suffered at the start of Apocalypse Now was a real drunken breakdown.
The ‘breakdown scene’ was filmed on Sheen’s 36th birthday, and he’d been drinking all day in celebration.
When it came time to shoot the scene, Sheen said, “I was so dangerously drunk I could hardly stand up.” Still, he committed to the scene’s objective, which was to establish his character, Captain Benjamin L. Willard, as dangerous and reckless. “I went very deep into my own personal pain and alcoholism and self-loathing and all of the things that make up a human being,” he said.
He notes, “I’m an alcoholic, I got sober in 1989…and I was drinking very heavily at that time.”
Seth Rogen was high while filming…everything.
In an interview on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Rogen said: “I do enjoy weed in my personal life and on film.”
When Colbert asked if we could assume that he was high in every movie that he’s been in, he responded: “One hundred percent, yes”.
