Today is day 236 of our national lockdown, in case you were keeping count.
While some of us are fortunate enough to work from home, which means wearing pyjamas for days on end, others aren’t so lucky, and a relaxing of COVID-19 precautions has seen a spike in infections in a number of regions across the country.
According to health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize, parts of the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape are experiencing a notable spike – more on that here.
In Germany, as in many countries across Europe, there’s been a return to stricter measures, with a month-long lockdown enacted from November 1.
Here’s the Telegraph:
Young people are believed to have been responsible for increased infections during the early autumn, with PCR testing picking up more positive cases among the young than the old.
In October higher numbers of elderly people started to test positive for the virus, leading to a sharp increase in hospitalizations that Germany is still trying to keep under control.
Germany now has more Covid-19 patients in its intensive care wards than in the spring and is seeing around 20,000 new cases per day.
In order to encourage Germans, and especially young Germans, to stay at home, the government has deployed a tongue-in-cheek advertising campaign focused on the selfless act of becoming a couch potato.
Some fought on the frontlines during various wars, and others were “as lazy as raccoons”:
I knew all of my couch-based training would eventually come in handy.
A follow-up was then released, from the perspective of Luise Lehmann, Anton’s future wife, explaining how the two has just met when the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
The video below doesn’t have subtitles overlayed, but you can switch them on by clicking on the ‘Settings’ wheel, selecting ‘Subtitles’, and choosing German to English:
All hail the mighty and brave couch potato.
