Last week, when John Oliver hosted Last Week Tonight and focused on the US election results, he probably thought he’d get to cover something different in his show’s season finale.
Come Sunday night, over in the US, and Donald Trump had yet to concede.
He still hasn’t, and he won’t ever, because to do so would mean admitting defeat and showing an iota of grace.
President-elect Joe Biden is chomping at the bit to get the transition wheels greased, adding that more lives will be lost if COVID-19 coordination between Trump’s team and his team doesn’t take place.
That won’t bother Donald – just like the first 250 000 deaths haven’t – but it does bother John enough for him to dive back in for another discussion on the president’s “various attempts to overturn the results, why his claims don’t hold water, and the consequences of indulging him”.
This isn’t Mariah Carey making diva demands about her changing room before a concert, so a Trump campaign official talking about “indulging him” is just ridiculous.
Off you go, John:
Thankfully, John did get to close season seven with a season finale, giving 2020 the farewell it deserves.
Adam Driver makes an appearance, and there’s a giant explosion:
