Occasionally, justice is swift, but for the most part, it’s a slow-moving process.
In the case of murder accused Gerhard Jansen van Vuuren, the process all but stalled after he fled to Brazil before he could face trial for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, 25-year-old Andrea Venter.
This tale has been told in various forms over the years, and in 2014 Carte Blanche covered how Venter had been “stalked, held captive, tortured and then brutally killed in full view of security cameras and witnesses at her home” in Fourway, Johannesburg, in 2011.

But from the prosecutor to the investigating officer, even to Interpol – law enforcement never gave up their relentless pursuit of justice. Now we recount the dramatic developments after the accused skipped bail, left the country on a false passport and disappeared in South America.
Whilst Jansen van Vuuren’s return has brought back painful memories for Venter’s family, they may finally be a step closer to seeing justice eventually served:
