Last night, Dustin Johnson romped home to win his first Masters title, conquering Augusta and ending up a full 20 shots below par.
There were no spectators lining the fairways, as America’s spiralling COVID-19 count dictates, or else the world number one would have spent most of the final few holes being clapped onto every green.
Talking of golf claps, you guys recall that time Australian bowler and moustache pioneer Merv Hughes sarcastically clapped West Indian opener Gordon Greenidge during the 1991 test series between the two foes?
To set that one up, here’s Cricket Country:
…Hughes and his fellow pacer Craig McDermott can be seen having a go at West Indian opener Gordon Greenidge while his partner Richie Richardson looks on from the other end. When Hughes comes agonisingly close to dismissing Greenidge but misses out, he vents out his frustration by sledging the batsman in a unique way.
Thanks to Glen for digging this one out of the vault:
A solid effort from Merv, but let’s relive perhaps his most famous chirp ever.
Pakistani Javed Miandad had chirped Merv that he resembled a bus driver, which led to a classic retort.
From the two-minute mark, you’ll hear Merv’s version:
In terms of an immediate response to a chirp, it’s tough to top this from Jimmy Anderson, after catching some lip from Mitchell Johnson:
I’m missing test cricket.
Can you tell?
