Back in September, the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) celebrated its 76th year, but there wasn’t much to celebrate.
Divisions between the Zuma and Ramaphosa factions, no legitimate provincial structures, a lack of organisation, and a lack of coherent leadership are just some of the things tearing it apart from the inside.
Now, to add insult to injury, it’s dealing with a hardcore porn site.
Before we get into that, you might recall that back in 2018 the ANC website took a dive. If you tried to visit the homepage you were met with a message declaring that it had been suspended “due to non-payment to the service provider”.
There was some back and forth about who did what, and what was and wasn’t paid, amidst accusations that someone was out there trying to cast doubt on the reputation of the party.
The usual.
What the ANC didn’t know is that it had it easy. The ANCYL, also in a payment dispute with its website developer, is dealing with a rather awkward crisis.
ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe told News24 that the Youth League website had been ‘hacked’ and that the party was investigating the matter.
By ‘hacked’ she means that someone gained unauthorised access to its website and posted pornographic material.
It was discovered on Tuesday morning.
The hackers posted around 30 videos which could be accessed by clicking a link that would usually take one to the ANCYL webpage.
We’re not in the business of traumatising people with ‘unsolicited d*ck pics’, so you can see this tweet if you’re curious.
The link was first brought to light by Nonceba Mhlauli, who slammed members of the National Youth Task Team (NYTT), calling them “useless” for not picking up the hack.
She added, “you have lost it”.
Then NYTT spokesperson Sizophile Mkhize said that they were not to blame, knew about the hack two weeks ago, and had alerted the ANC to it.
Two weeks of porn and no one did anything about it?
Good job, guys.
He also said that the ANCYL had been unable to regain control or upload content on the website since 2015 when the developer of the site blocked them.
“The developer claims that the ANC owes it outstanding payments so this has been a longstanding issue and they are refusing to hand over the website to the Youth League.”
ANC legal advisor Krish Naidoo is blaming the service provider.
“The ANC would have delinked the porn site from the Youth League website itself had [the service provider] honoured an arbitrator’s award to hand over ownership of the ANC website to the ANC.”
There’s a lot of blame flying around.
Websites are tough when no one can get it together.
