Keen for a break from all things related to the US election?
Yup, me too.
Let’s veer wildly off course and take a trip to China to meet Jiang Yunbo, a three-year-old from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province.
He goes by the nickname ‘Little Rice Cake’, and he’s one helluva table tennis player.
Videos featuring Yunbo have gone viral across Chinese social media platforms, with his speed, agility, and focus astonishing many.
CGTN reports:
“When he was one-and-a-half years old, I thought that he was too little to learn anything, but then it suddenly occurred to me that I might try to teach him to play table tennis, or teach him how to hold the paddle. However, when he held the paddle in his hand, I found that he was quite interested, and from then on, I started (training him) and insisted on letting him play every day while standing by a small tea table,” said Jiang’s grandmother who is also his “coach.”
It helps that his grandmother is also a former table tennis pro, and she encourages him to practice for at least an hour each day.
Here’s the wee lad in action:
In case you’re wondering, that is not a regulation size table tennis table.
Even though his grandmother seems intent on moulding Jiang into a champion, his mother has advised caution:
Videos of Jiang practicing on Douyin, the Chinese version of Tik Tok, has already helped him own over 54,000 followers, with many astounded by his ability and precision.
However, despite Jiang’s obvious talent and potential, his mother said that they will respect the child’s own choices for his future career.
Good stuff.
Let him forge his own path.
Quite nice to focus on something other than the US election, hey?
