Quite remarkably, the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident you will see below is still alive, although his injuries are considered serious.
A street camera captured the moment the man ploughed into the front of the historic St Andrew’s College chapel, late on Tuesday night, after his car took flight through a traffic circle.
According to police spokesperson Capt Mali Govender, who spoke with TimesLIVE, “the driver was bleeding badly, including seemingly from the ears, and was taken to hospital”.
There are some reports that it may have been a SANDF soldier behind the wheel, but these are unconfirmed.

It’s unclear if the prestigious Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) school’s chapel sustained any damage, but given that the 2020 school fees are R291 000 per boarder, and R130 074 for day pupils, they should be able to foot the bill.
