Today is the final chance for Americans to head to the polls and cast their vote.
More than 96 million have already done so, via early voting measures, and it looks likely that the US will see its largest turnout in more than a century.
Remarkably, whilst Joe Biden has been picked by many pollsters as the favourite, Donald Trump is still in with a shot.
This despite a complete and abject failure to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic, which has claimed in excess of 236 000 American lives.
Trump’s failure on this front has been well documented, and is the subject of a damning doccie titled Totally Under Control, but it’s worth a (perhaps) final look at what has led America to this point.
A point where wearing a face mask is a political issue, the nation’s top experts are undermined and ridiculed, and the country is currently setting records for the daily number of new cases.
We likely will not know who has won the presidential election by tomorrow, because an election is over when all the votes are counted, not when Fox News or a president terrified of losing says so.
What we do know is that no matter who comes out on top, Trump will still call the shots until midday on January 20. If you think he’s a loose cannon now, wait until he doesn’t have the worry of trying to get reelected hanging over him.
As John Oliver pointed out during Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, that should terrify every American:
