Wandering around a Walmart is quite something.
The often incredible people-watching aside, a decent-sized outlet is like Makro on steroids, with pretty much everything you would need available under one roof.
In around half of Walmart’s 4 700 US stores, you’ll also find firearms for sale, although the retail chain has now pulled guns and ammunition from display, citing concerns related to “civil unrest”.
Reporting below via the BBC:
It is not yet known how long firearms will be removed from the sales floor…
The decision comes after a fatal police shooting in Philadelphia triggered protests that saw some shops looted.
The family of Walter Wallace Jr, an African American, says he was suffering a mental health crisis when officers opened fire on him. Police say they shot him because he would not drop a knife.
In a statement, Walmart spokesman Kory Lundberg said the company has “moved our firearms and ammunition off the sales floor as a precaution for the safety of our associates and customers”.
Firearms and bullets are still available to purchase, although customers will have to request them ahead of time, rather than arriving and simply grabbing what the want from the display shelf.
Earlier in the week, Martin Luther King III, the eldest son of the famous civil rights leader, spoke about his fears of a US civil war following next week’s election.
With tensions already boiling over at some election polling stations across the country, leading to heated exchanges between Joe Biden and Donald Trump supporters, King III won’t be alone in those thoughts.
He spoke with Sky News:
…he’s nervously worried about a disputed election and the chatter about taking up arms. “Everyone is buying up guns,” he says, “on both sides. And I’m very concerned that there’s even talk of civil war.
“To me that’s a very sad sign… and frightening. Because you can’t shoot the problem out.”
No, you have to vote the problem out.
Hopefully, the US election process isn’t further subverted, all the votes are tallied, and America and the world can put this nightmare behind them.
