Despite a tough year for education institutions during the pandemic, our universities have powered through, academics have kept those publications flowing, and we’re still holding up in the global rankings.
US News and World Report has published its 2021 Best Global Universities rankings, including the top five universities in South Africa, two of which fall into the top 200 universities in the world.
That’s good going because the full list comprises 1 500 institutions.
The list was created to help prospective students determine where they want to apply, especially if they’re considering studying abroad.
Here’s how the scores are weighted by category, via US News:
Results from Clarivate’s Academic Reputation Survey aggregated for the most recent five years, from 2016 to 2020, were used to determine how universities are perceived globally.
Which brings us to the top five in South Africa:
UCT is my alma mater, and I’m currently registered at Wits, so I’m feeling pretty chuffed right now.
Sorry Stellies, better luck next time.
The top five are roughly the same as the top five ranked by the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR) released earlier this year. The only difference is that the University of Pretoria was at number five, while UJ came in at number six.
The top 10 universities in the world haven’t changed since last year, with Harvard University leading the pack, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Stanford University.
Johns Hopkins University in Maryland is the only new addition to the top 10, moving up one spot to tenth place.
Check out the rest of the top 10 here.
