Back in 2010, I downloaded Inception and fully intended to watch it.
Then it was stuck on a hard drive, and shunted from laptop to laptop, but I was definitely going to tick that box at some stage.
Here we are a decade later, and it remains unwatched, due in part to the fact that I know I’m going to have to pay attention for close to three hours to figure out what the hell is going on.
Then I’m going to realise I failed on that front, and will spend another half-hour reading through posts like this, which explain what the ending actually means.
Using monthly Google searches for movie explainers as the criteria for ranking, UK-based online retailer OnBuy has ranked the 18 most confusing Hollywood blockbusters of all time, and it’s no surprise that Inception came out on top.
On average, according to OnBuy’s analysis of monthly search volumes, 80 090 people hit the web trying to piece together Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi/action classic.
It should be noted that his latest movie, Tenet, is too new to qualify for the list, but reviews suggest that it may well feature down the line.
Via NewsAU, let’s run through numbers two through 10:
10. Memento – 24,060 people a month (Google for further explanation)
9. Citizen Kane – 25,480 people a month
8. The Matrix – 27,120 people a month
7. 2001: A Space Odyssey – 31,260 people a month
6. Donnie Darko – 32,310 people a month
5. Ex Machina – 32,440 people a month
4. Interstellar – 47,060 people a month
3. The Shining – 48,950 people a month
2. Shutter Island – 55,700 people a month
That last number gives you an idea of just how far out in front Inception is.
Also, I guess we should just assume that all Christopher Nolan films are going to leave us a little confused.
If being terrified is more your vibe, you can warm up for Halloween with these five horror classics.
