As more information has become available regarding COVID-19, and further studies conducted, the advice around how best to combat its spread has changed.
For example, the World Health Organisation (WHO), or ‘Organization’ if you play by North America’s rules, initially released guidance saying that healthy people don’t need to wear face masks to prevent the spread.
That would change in the weeks and months that followed, but many around the world saw the shift in approach as a sign that the WHO wasn’t worth listening to, or was ‘a puppet for China’.
As John Oliver pointed out during Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, that’s a talking point that President Donald Trump loves to bang on about, due in large part to the fact that he’s keen to pass the buck for America’s complete and utter failure to effectively handle the pandemic.
During the same show, Oliver also covered the crucial role of the WHO in managing crises exactly like this, and why the US withdrawing from it could have dire consequences.
