An SAPS officer will appear in the Boksburg magistrate’s court today on assault charges, after footage of him repeatedly punching a Pick n Pay manager in Reiger Park, Ekurhuleni, was widely shared on social media.
The video caught the attention of Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), with spokesperson Ndileka Cola condemning the officer’s conduct.
According to IOL, she added that there was “a plan in place to eradicate the rising number of police misconduct cases”, and “the directorate is working with SAPS (about) the professionalism of police officers through station lectures, educating the police of the mandate of Ipid and implications of transgressing the laws”.
Say what you want, but this is a really terrible look.
The attack, which took place on Tuesday night, was caught on CCTV cameras located outside the store:
The police officer’s motives for the attack are unknown, although unconfirmed reports suggest “the officer had gone to the store to ask for footage that showed his missing child”.
The Ipid investigation is ongoing.
