Hot on the heels of Apple’s virtual launch event, aptly titled ‘Time Flies’, which brought us the revolutionary new Apple Watch, the company has released its new range of hotly anticipated iPhones.
The four iPhones in the range, the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone Pro 12 Max, which have all new designs and will all support 5G wireless networks, were announced in another pre-recorded virtual event on Tuesday, this time under the banner ‘Hi, Speed’.
If, after reading the below, you’re itching to upgrade, a reminder that you can trade in your older Apple goodies (up to five iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch or Apple TV products) for store credit at Digicape, which will knock the price right down.
For more on the latest launch, and a breakdown of what you can expect from your new device, let’s head on over to The Verge.
iPhone 12:
The standard iPhone 12, complete with edges not dissimilar to the popular iPhone 4 and iPhone 5, is 6,1 inches, and comes with two rear cameras, both of which will support night mode.
More from WIRED:
The iPhone 12 has a 12-megapixel ultrawide rear camera, with a wider aperture that’s supposed to offer much better low-light performance. The camera supports an updated version of the high dynamic range (HDR) imaging standard.
The screen also has a ‘Ceramic Shield’ glass cover aimed at making the screen more durable (anyone who has ever dropped an iPhone will be popping open the champagne to celebrate this).
The iPhone 12 also comes with what Apple calls ‘MagSafe’, a term borrowed from the now-extinct magnetised MacBook laptop charging ports and applying it to phones. You can buy a magnetised MagSafe wallet for your iPhone, and it will improve the phone’s wireless charging capabilities with Apple-made and third-party wireless charging stations.
As someone who enjoys the simpler things in life, I’m particularly amped about the iPhone 12 Mini – a smaller phone, with a 5,4-inch screen and similar specs to the full-sized iPhone 12.
Then there’s the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone Pro Max.
iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone Pro Max:
Get ready for Apple’s biggest iPhone to date, with its 6,7-inch screen.
Back to The Verge:
The iPhone 12 Pro Max has three back cameras that offer a 5X optical zoom range, a LIDAR sensor for things like improved augmented reality apps and autofocus, and a stainless steel outer band.
The iPhone Pro is a smaller, but no less powerful version of the Pro Max.
As an added bonus, Apple also announced the new HomePod Mini:
The new HomePod Mini is a smaller version of the original model with a rounded shape. Much like the full-sized HomePod the compact version has touch controls on top, integration with Siri, and comes in two colours – space grey and white.
