Yesterday, Rustenburg witnessed a shootout between the Rustenburg Flying Squad, K9 Unit, and a group of suspects after police followed up on information about a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist in Geelhoutpark.
The tip had police patrolling the area when they came across the active scene of the CIT robbery as they were driving along Watsonia road.
The suspects fired shots at the police, who then retaliated.
Police spokesperson Colonel Brenda Muridili explained what happened next to News24:
“The unknown number of suspects got into their getaway vehicles and fled the scene. The police gave chase [to] Tlhabane Shopping Centre, where another shootout ensued, resulting in five members sustaining gunshot wounds while one suspect was fatally wounded. At the scene of the robbery, two security guards were also injured during the shootout.”
All those who were injured were taken to a nearby hospital to receive medical attention.

According to The Citizen, the North West province has instituted a 72-hour “activation plan”, which ensures that all hands are on deck in investigating and tracing the suspects who are still at large.
Police are appealing to members of the public to come forward if they have any information that could lead to an arrest.
