Under alert level 1 in South Africa, we’re allowed to hold larger gatherings, but I won’t be attending one in a hurry.
I ventured out of the house yesterday on foot, on a journey to the shop that would usually take me two minutes if I didn’t have to go to great lengths to avoid everyone who wasn’t wearing a mask. I counted at least eight maskless people over a 10-metre stretch of pavement.
So, thanks for the invite to your party, wedding, or event, but unless you can guarantee masks are worn, and worn over the nose, along with people who respect the need for physical distancing, I will be staying at home.
Under alert level 1 in South Africa, attendance at a venue for a wedding, exhibition, or any other function is limited to 50% of the capacity of the venue with a maximum of 250 persons indoors, and 500 people at an outside venue.
In the UK, at this juncture, it’s a little trickier, with only 15 people allowed to attend an event. For a number of couples, this means having a difficult conversation with the family members who have to be struck from the guest list, if the wedding is going to happen.
Then there’s Roma Popat and Vinal Patel (above and below) who came up with the kind of solution that even I could get behind.
According to Sky News, they achieved the impossible. They got married in front of 200 friends and family without breaking lockdown rules. They also arranged the whole thing in just three weeks.
They held the ceremony directly in front of a small number of immediate family. It was also shown on a big screen outside where quests watched the live stream from more than 100 parked cars.
I’m impressed. If you’ve ever attended an Indian wedding, you’ll know that pulling it off in three weeks, with this sort of adjustment to the plans, is no mean feat. They deserve some sort of commendation.
The screened wedding also made it possible for family from all around the world to watch the ceremony.
Congratulations to the happy couple – on their wedding and their genius.
