If you grew up in the 90s, it’s safe to say that video games were a part of your life.
I have zero interest in the Xbox and PlayStation that takes up space in my home today, but back then I’d spend hours at my friend’s place messing around on his Nintendo console.
He was my home skillet and had a ton of cartridges with awesome graphics. It was radical.
In retrospect, the graphics weren’t that awesome.
If you have no idea what I’m talking about, watch High Score. It’s a doccie that goes into the history of gaming.
To help you reminisce about the old days, Nintendo recently released Super Mario Bros 35. It’s free for Nintendo Switch Online members, to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Super Mario.
Feel old yet?
For those of you who don’t own a Switch, but want to relive the magic, here’s Parade with five retro games that you can play online.
Super Mario World
Yeah, you could get your nostalgia kicks playing Mario Maker 2, or you could just go straight to the source.
This 1990 Super Nintendo Entertainment System game was popular with the Super Mario Bros. franchise fans. In the game, players help the heroic Mario save Princess Toadstool and Dinosaur Land from the big bad Bowser and his army of Koopaling minions.
Available to play at ArcadeSpot.
Street Fighter II: The World Warrior
This game was oddly gruesome for its time.
This is a competitive fighting game and one of the all-time classics that completely changed the gaming industry. Originally released for arcade systems nearly 30 years ago, it’s the second installment in the Street Fighter series and the sequel to Street Fighter, released in 1987.
Available to play at Play Classic.
The Legend of Zelda
Mention The Legend of Zelda to game enthusiast and sometimes Dungeon Master, Mo (he usually handles the gaming content around here), and he’ll talk at you – yes at you – for what feels like days.
In this adventure game, players strive to help the Hero of Time, Link, take on Ganon, the Prince of Darkness, in order to save Princess Zelda. In the game, you can roll a big rock down a hill and destroy their camp, set fire to the grass, hop on your glider, catch the updraft and drop magic bombs on them in the confusion, leave poison food out for them, or rush in with the biggest sword you’ve got while dressed like The Kurgen from Highlander or like Princess Jasmine.
Available to play at RetroGames.
Pokémon Red and Blue
Gotta catch them all.
In this journey, you’ll set off to acquire as many Pokémon as you can. Next, you’ll enlist your team to take on the eight Gym Leaders and the world’s top Pokemon trainers.
Available to play at ArcadeSpot.
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic effectively saved SEGA from the edge of a cliff.
This fast-paced platforming game made its debut on the Sega Genesis in 1991, with Sonic marketed as a mascot to challenge Nintendo’s massively popular Mario.
Available to play at GamesHaha.
All of the above can be played on your computer, which means that all of your procrastination needs are officially sorted.
You’re welcome.
Happy gaming!
