My favourite part of people returning from a few days ‘off the grid’ is watching them post about it relentlessly across multiple social media platforms.
“So relaxing, so unplugged, such serenity and peace”, spread across Facebook and Instagram, in posts and stories, with a ‘Throwback Thursday’ guaranteed down the line.
Yeah, we see you.
Unplugging from social media and technology is the central premise of Save Yourselves!, a new comedy starring John Reynolds and Sunita Mani, with a side of alien invasion thrown into the mix.
Here’s the synopsis from the official Bleecker Street trailer:
Jack (John Reynolds) and Su (Sunita Mani) are a Brooklyn couple who, like many of their friends, find themselves dependent on technology and unable to put down their phones.
Fearing their mindless scrolling may impact their connection with each other, they seize the chance to head to an isolated cabin in the woods, vowing to unplug from the outside world for a week.
Sheltered from texts and push notifications, they are blissfully unaware that the planet is under attack.
As strange events unfold, the couple must figure out a way back to civilization—or what’s left of it.
What’s worse, being uninformed about an alien invasion, or the likes of YouTube and Facebook melting your mind to the point where you believe in QAnon?
I think I’ll take my chances with the aliens, thanks.
Let’s see Jack and Su in action:
The reviews are a mixed bag, with some calling it a “wry social comedy” with “darkly funny episodes of various humans getting offed by the creatures”, whereas another says “the film fails to use its millennial characters to investigate contemporary attitudes about the possibility of world annihilation”.
If you do end up watching it, you’ll probably be scrolling through your phone at the same time anyway, so I’m not sure it matters.
The film is due for release this Friday, October 2, in the US.
