Colin Firth doesn’t appear to be one of those actors who cashes cheques by starring in rubbish movies every so often.
He does have a few questionable credits to his name, but nothing like Robert de Niro, for example, who recently appeared in The War with Grandpa.
I haven’t seen it, but sheesh, how desperate is de Niro for a payday?
Anyway, let’s focus on Colin and Stanley Tucci’s new movie, Supernova, which IndieWire calls “a tearjerker relationship drama centred around one man’s early-onset dementia”:
Here’s the official synopsis: “It is deep Autumn and Sam and Tusker, partners of 20 years, are on holiday. They are traveling across England in their old camper van visiting friends, family and places from their past. Since Tusker was diagnosed with young-onset dementia two years ago their lives have had to change. Jobs have been given up and plans put on hold. Their time together is now the most important thing they have. As the trip progresses however, their individual ideas for their future begin to collide. Secrets are uncovered, private plans unravel and their love for each other is tested like never before. Ultimately, they must confront the question of what it means to love one another in the face of Tusker’s irreparable illness.”
This will not be a laugh a minute lighthearted rom-com.
The trailer, for your perusal:
Review wise, the Guardian scored it four stars, saying “the veteran pair are on magnificent form in a drama about love and mortality that is all the more powerful for its restraint”.
The Variety review was also full of praise, saying “Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci Gently Smash Your Heart to Smithereens”.
OK, noted – not the kind of movie you pop on at 8PM when you’re after something easy to watch.
UK distributor Studiocanal currently has Supernova scheduled for a November 27 release.
