South Africa’s two most notorious orcas, Port and Starboard, were filmed just off the Cape coast last week.
That’s worrying news for sharks in the area, given that the duo was believed to be responsible for the death of another great white shark, found washed up at De Gruis, in Gansbaai, in July.
This past weekend’s sighting didn’t involve either of those two, but Dave Hurwitz, who owns and operates Simon’s Town Boat Company, and his guests were treated to something pretty spectacular.
Dave detailed the sighting in this Facebook post:
As we approached, to much tail slapping and splashes and took our first look at the commotion, we could hardly believe our eyes – Orcas… two Saturdays in a row!
Last week we had Port & Starboard and today, different animals, perhaps part of their clan and also fish eaters, but they weren’t hunting the torpedo shaped finned variety. There were 2 males and a sub-adult female and we suspect their prey could have been Maasbanker (Atlantic horse mackerel) as there’s been a lot around and gulls were hovering above picking up the leftovers following the orcas “karate chop” tail slapping.
Just watching them hunting would have been just perfect, but then one of the pod threw in a number of spectacular breaches right alongside us – and we were on cloud nine!
Dave says they spent around 90 minutes with the orcas, before moving on and finding eight humpback whales near Seal Island.
He calls this “a tough day at the office”, so it sounds like he’s living life the right way.
Here’s footage of one of the spectacular breaches he witnessed, with a tail slap right at the end:
