On Friday, we featured the now-infamous video of Donovan Tooth ranting about “overweight little hippos” needing “to get on a treadmill, and lose the f*cking weight!”
At the time, we didn’t name Tooth, but we did predict that he was about to endure a rough few days.
It was only a matter of time before Tooth released an apology video, which was then removed when he deleted all of his social media accounts, in a sequence of events that we have seen time and time again.
Yet, somehow, people never learn, and they insist on broadcasting their most toxic thoughts on social media, for all to see.
As is customary with these things, the apology does little to abate the public backlash, and Tooth has now told TimesLIVE that both he and his family are under fire:
“I have gotten death threats … My family have gotten threats … I am getting attacked,” he said.
He added that his cellphone number had been leaked and he had been inundated with calls and messages.
“It is truly and honestly horrible,” he said.
For those hurt by his hateful words, Tooth’s struggles will be met with little to no sympathy.
The fallout has also extended to boycotts against PANDA Clothing, whose apparel the alleged “amateur bodybuilder” was wearing during his tirade.
The company has deleted its Facebook account, and disabled comments on the Instagram post below:
That’s all well and good, but this certificate, issued by the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission and shared by @DonovanRich, shows that Tooth is the sole director of PANDA.
See under Active Members / Directors:
Just the one name, and it’s Tooth’s.
When TimesLIVE pressed him on this fact, Tooth failed to respond, and also “refused to answer pointed questions on the internal review and disciplinary process”.
On social media, women have come together to share stories of why Tooth’s words were so triggering, and why a boycott is necessary:
Supplement store TTT Legacy has already dropped the brand.
Owner Bianca Jachau said: “I have supported this brand for two years, I have stocked it and have proudly pushed the brand … I just want to let you know I have just pulled your whole range from my store.
“You can cancel my new order and you will never see my business again,” she added.
You can bet that Jachau won’t be the last person to distance themselves from PANDA Clothing.
As of yet, it appears that there are no legal ramifications for using his mobile phone while driving.
I find it remarkable that in this day and age, somebody willfully uploads the kind of drivel that Tooth did, without the slightest bit of foresight that it’s all going to unravel.
Does Tooth not read the news? Has he never scrolled through the headlines and seen the cycle that plays out each and every time a video like this goes viral?
Maybe they don’t teach news literacy in “amateur bodybuilding” school.
