Every so often, you see a video that makes you wonder how we have devolved to this point.
All the world’s information at our fingertips, and yet somehow we’re turning into the movie Idiocracy.
Social media clearly isn’t helping (do yourself a favour and watch The Social Dilemma ASAP), and neither is the fact that politicians the world over are encouraging supporters to tune out scientific facts to aid their own agendas.
This week, a news segment that was actually aired on August 21 has reemerged, showing protesters at a rally in St. George, Utah.
Before we get to that, here are some basics via The Cut:
According to ABC News 4, as many as 1,000 people showed up to join the protest, organized by a group called the Liberty Action Coalition, against the mask mandate the local school district had enacted as classes resumed.
The available evidence suggests masks are effective in mitigating coronavirus transmission and would help the U.S. rein in the pandemic if only we would all agree to wear them. But this being big-freedom country, that ask clearly isn’t sitting well with everyone.
Many people have pointed out that this resembles a Saturday Night Live sketch, and honestly, they’re not wrong.
It’s like watching dominoes tumble over, as each person featured is progressively more insane than the person that came before.
My personal favourite is the old woman who shouts about child molesters loving masks. The less said about the George Floyd comments the better.
Strap in, and get ready for a rollercoaster ride of ignorance and stupidity:
‘MERICA!
Jokes aside, that kid speaking about the flu killing more people than COVID-19 is really sad.
The latest data shows that there have been 199 000 COVID-19 deaths in the US, and there are currently more than 2,5 million confirmed active cases.
South Africa has just under 56 000 confirmed active cases, with 15 499 deaths.
