On August 10, tragedy struck at a clinic in the city of Red Deer, in Canada’s Alberta province.
45-year-old South African-born family doctor Walter Reynolds (above) was going about his day as usual, when a patient wielding a hammer and a machete entered the clinic and attacked him in his office, ultimately taking his life.
Reynolds’ alleged killer, Deng Mabiour (below), told a judge at his first court appearance shortly after the incident that he didn’t understand the charges levelled against him:
“No, I didn’t understand, because I am sick. I lost memory. Listen to me, I don’t remember. I want a doctor”.
Mabiour is charged with first-degree murder, assault with a weapon, and assaulting a police officer.
Last week, reports CBC, provincial court judge Bert Skinner ordered a five-day psychiatric assessment to determine whether or not he is fit to stand trial.
This followed a series of statements from Mabiour about his actions on the day of the alleged murder.
“Why do you not ask me why I killed my family doctor?” Mabiour said to the judge last week. “I killed him for good reason.”
On Monday, the judge was informed that Mabiour had refused to cooperate with staff at the Calgary psychiatric centre and has to date not been visited by a doctor.
To add to the difficulty of kicking off a trial, Mabiour is refusing to take legal council.
When the judge ordered him to contact legal aid to get a lawyer as soon as possible, he called legal aid “stupid” and said, “I’m good enough to talk in the court. … Why should I have a lawyer represent me?”
He also said he’s concerned about being forced to undergo a psychiatric assessment.
“I do not want to discuss this. First of all, I want to discuss the concept of my handlers considering I’m crazy and needing treatment,” Mabiour said, while constantly interrupting the judge.
Mabiour went on to talk about the water quality at the psychiatric facility, saying “I don’t want the water. It has COVID.”
The case is scheduled to return to court on October 14, hopefully with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation that will determine how it will proceed.
