That man above is Donald Fear, which is a rather ironic name in light of his performance on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?
The show is definitely easier from the comfort of the couch at home, when huge sums of money aren’t on the line, but Fear didn’t put a foot wrong, and hardly broke a sweat, en route to becoming the show’s first jackpot winner in 14 years.
Fear, a 57-year-old history and politics teacher with four children of his own, used just the one lifeline, 50:50, along the way.
Let’s see the question that won him the £1 million, becoming the sixth champion in the ITV programme’s 22-year history:
Not even Jeremy Clarkson could dampen his spirits.
How about this for a remarkable double-act – Fear’s brother, Davyth, won £500 000 as a contestant on the same programme last year.
Clearly, Davyth is the black sheep of the family.
More via Sky:
Asked how he would be spending his next holiday, Mr Fear revealed he intended to buy a motor home and visit “wonderful Britain”.
He said: “Much as I’d love to jump on the next plane to the States or something like that, it’s just not an option.”
…Jeremy Clarkson, the show’s host, said Mr Fear was like “having the Encyclopaedia Britannica sitting opposite me” and added: “It’s Google, in a head”.
Fear went on to say that he will give at least 70% of his winnings to members of his family.
With regards to the final, winning answer, Fear claimed it was perfect for him, as a history teacher and a “date’s man”, and he said he was certain it was Blackbeard as soon as he saw 1718.
If you’d like to try and match Fear each step of the way, you’ll find a list of the questions he faced towards the bottom of the Sky article.
