After something of a lockdown lull, crime is back on the up and up, with armed robberies throughout South Africa making headlines.
Last week, a video was doing the rounds on social media showed a woman leaving a daycare with a child. She was robbed at gunpoint by an armed criminal in the driveway of the childcare facility.
The dust has barely settled before another video cropped up, this time of a man returning to his home in Brakpan.
According to Jacaranda FM, on Tuesday, September 1, Lood De Jager (not that one) had visited the bank at the Mall@Carnival where he withdrew his salary in cash.
He was followed home by armed attackers who confronted him in his driveway.
“I first noticed them when they parked behind me in my driveway”, he told News24.
“They came to the window and told me to open up, so I did.”
“They took my keys and I just thought, they must take my car and go, it’s insured.”
“But then he started asking me where’s the money; I know you have the money”, he said.
De Jager’s granddaughter had come outside to open the gate with two Dobermans. She saw what was happening, but before she could close the gate, the dogs ran out to help De Jager.
Before you watch the video, you should know that while Niki, a four-year-old Doberman, was shot during the attack, she survived and is recovering at home with her owners:
Not all heroes wear capes. Some of them have paws.
Niki, (below with De Jager’s granddaughter), was shot from above, with the bullet passing through her back. She now has 14 stitches.
“She is brave, she has been trained like that. She saved my life, they would have shot me, they told me they were going to shoot me,” said De Jager.
“Niki’s fine now, but she’s very mad.”
The whole family is terrified now and Riaan Viviers, De Jager’s friend, has started a BackaBuddy campaign to help him out, after the robbers made off with his entire salary, minus R200 which he found on the side of the road.
There’s a special place in hell for criminals who will violently rob and terrorise a family, before shooting a dog.
