The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021 includes more than 1 500 universities across 93 countries and regions, making them the largest and most diverse university rankings to date.
With that in mind, we’re pretty proud to say that of the 11 universities ranked in South Africa, five cracked a spot in the top 500.
The rankings are based on 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance, awarding a score out of 100, across four areas: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.
Per SowetanLIVE, and before we get to the top five, you should know that after the top 200 are ranked, the rest fall into categories.
North-West University, for example, fell into the 501-600 category.
With that in mind, here are the top five South African universities:

Oxford University in the UK once again took the top spot globally, for the fifth year running, while the US dominated the top 10 with a record eight positions.
The US institutions in the top 10 are Stanford University (2); Harvard University (3); California Institute of Technology (4); Massachusetts Institute of Technology (5); University of California, Berkeley (7); Yale University (8); Princeton University (9); and University of Chicago (10).
