After months, nay, years, of obsessing about Adele’s weight, the internet has found something else to fixate on.
I’m going to avoid dishing out any personal opinions on this one because I’m not Jamaican and it isn’t my place, but here’s the story as it seems to have played out.
On Sunday, Adele posted a picture on Instagram of her wearing a bikini with the Jamaican flag on it, and her hair in “Bantu knots“.
For context, she was trying to show her support for The Notting Hill Carnival – an annual event led by members of the British West Indian community. It’s a significant event in Black British culture and is attended by more than two million people every year.

Twitter is divided between those who view what she is doing as ‘cultural appropriation’:
While others have come to her defence:
Type #Adele into the search bar on Twitter, take a scroll, and you’ll find a mixed bag of reactions.
You’ll obviously also find racist trolls who can’t help turning this into an opportunity to be offensive towards black people.
A standard day on social media, then.
