The supposedly official story about Renate Blauel and Elton John’s divorce in 1988, was that it was amicable.
For decades, that was the narrative that both seemed to stick to.
It was even portrayed that way in Rocketman, the biopic that recorded John’s rise to fame up until he entered rehabilitation before turning his life around.
We know that he ended the marriage when he came to terms with his homosexuality.
It wasn’t easy for gay men to come out in the 1980s, especially when their careers relied heavily on public support.
Then, seemingly out of the blue, Blauel launched legal proceedings in June this year, seeking damages and an injunction against him.
Now, new information has come to light in the court documents about their relationship, and Blauel’s mental health, when the couple was still together, reports The Telegraph.
Blauel’s representation, barrister Adam Wolanski QC, claims that John was aware of her struggles with depression and anxiety, citing an anxiety attack that she succumbed to in front of the late Queen Mother and Princess Margaret.
“In or about 1985, the claimant and defendant hosted a lunch for members of the Royal family including the late Queen Mother, Princess Margaret and Prince Andrew,” he continued.
“During this visit, Princess Margaret asked the claimant about a painting belonging to the defendant. The claimant was unable to recall any details about the painting and this caused her to panic and become very anxious.”
“She interrupted the defendant’s conversation with the Queen Mother to ask for assistance before removing herself to another room.”
She didn’t explain to John why she had left the room, but says that it should have been obvious to him that it was because of her anxiety.
She also claims to have attempted suicide three days into their honeymoon, “after he told her their marriage was not working”.
Blauel says that she took an overdose of Valium when John “wanted her to leave”.
She was rushed to hospital to have her stomach pumped and claims that Sir Elton, who she had married less than six months earlier, did not even visit her during her stay before having her driven straight to the airport with her luggage from the hospital door.
Blauel has launched a £3 million damages claim against the singer, saying that he broke the terms of their divorce agreement. He had allegedly agreed not to discuss the details of their marriage in public, which she feels he violated in the biopic, and his book Me, Elton John.
John denies knowing that she was susceptible to mental health issues, and that he has not violated the terms of their agreement.
As we’ve seen in the past, divorce-related cases can turn ugly.
And while I’m sure this won’t be as bad as the one that played out in the various court proceedings that dragged Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s horrifying relationship into the spotlight, it could still get nasty.
Blauel’s court case is pending.
