Honestly, I’m surprised it took this long.
Back in March, KFC was already facing backlash for bad timing when it released another ‘finger lickin’ good’ ad campaign in Britain, just after the region faced a rise in confirmed COVID-19 cases.
Nando’s caught wind of this and couldn’t help taking a swipe at them with an ad campaign of their own, bearing the slogan “turns out finger licking isn’t good”.
It has been five months since that happened, and KFC has finally decided that promoting finger lickin’ probably isn’t ideal under the circumstances.
Per Sky News, the slogan that adorned ad campaigns and chicken buckets and boxes for 64 years, will now be a little harder to read.
The fried chicken chain has released new images of their packaging and advertising posters with the slogan pixelated.
It said Colonel Sanders’ “It’s Finger Lickin’ Good” saying will return “when the time is right” but will alter its messaging for now.
KFC restaurants were closed in the UK in March, but have now reopened with strict health and safety protocols in place.
“We find ourselves in a unique situation – having an iconic slogan that doesn’t quite fit in the current environment,” said Catherine Tan-Gillespie, global chief marketing officer at KFC.
It’s…good.
“While we are pausing the use of It’s Finger Lickin’ Good, rest assured the food craved by so many people around the world isn’t changing one bit.”
KFC says that it can hold onto the slogan, albeit for future use, “with a little help from our friends”.
So ‘they’ll get by’.
That was a Beatles reference.
I’ll stop now.
In the meantime, in Britain, the government has reduced VAT on hot meals from 20% to 5% for six months to help recover some of the revenue lost while restaurants and fast food chains were closed.
KFC will be reducing their prices on “fan favourites” by £1.
And, yes, I am aware that people aren’t stupid, and probably won’t go licking their fingers at every opportunity, but let’s face it – it wasn’t a good look.
This was for the best, and the chicken tastes the same.
