Do we really need another ‘Batman’ movie?
Apparently, we do, and to be fair to the teaser trailer released over the weekend, there could be something to the latest iteration of the DC Comics story.
Robert Pattinson is the latest actor to don the suit (further proof that he’s left his Twilight days behind him), but it’s the actor playing The Penguin that I find most surprising.
Colin bloody Farrell, man, who underwent quite a transformation for the role:
I had to search the eyes to confirm this is, in fact, my man Colin Farrell. #TheBatman #DCFanDome pic.twitter.com/VMwN70EoKJ

Before we spell out who’s who, let’s see that first teaser trailer:
Bonus point for the choice of soundtrack, which is suitably dark and ominous.
This from CNET:
We see in one scene that Pattinson’s Dark Knight will bring a violent, unrelenting fighting style. Trying to figure out his role in battling the evil of Gotham, he’s unsure how he fits into helping Gotham PD.
“We will see Batman grow, make mistakes … and be flawed,” [director Matt] Reeves said during the [DC FanDome] panel. “We also get to see him being the world’s greatest detective.”
We also snatched glimpses of Zoe Kravitz playing Catwoman, John Turturro as Gotham mob boss Carmine Falcone, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth (well, we hear his voice), Paul Dano as Riddler and Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon.
There’s not a great deal given away in terms of plot, although Reeves did say during the panel that villains like The Penguin and Riddler aren’t the fully formed characters they will eventually become, and are just “starting out”.
Don’t get too excited about all of this, because we are quite some way from seeing a final product. Here’s Screen Rant:
Only a portion of filming for the movie had been completed before production was shut down in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. Filming is expected to resume in the fall, and the movie is currently set for release on October 1, 2021…
[Reeves] went on to say that most of the characters in the upcoming film will be versions of the Batman villains that fans have never seen before, explaining that the characters will all be connected through a single mystery that Batman must solve.
Good – we really don’t need another portrayal of the Joker.
Just the 14 or so months until all is revealed.
