Since 1851, Australians have been finding gold near Tarnagulla in the state of Victoria.
It’s an area with vast stretches of virgin ground that has been untouched by mining or development.
In recent times, technology has made it possible to detect gold with less effort than was needed by prospectors in the late 1800s.
While I’m sure contemporary gold diggers and treasure hunters put their fair share of effort in, digging randomly in the hopes of finding something takes a level of commitment that I aspire to, but will probably never achieve.
I’m okay with that.
At the same time, I wouldn’t say no to two massive chunks of gold, like those found by prospectors Brent Shannon and Ethan West, the stars of the reality TV show Aussie Gold Hunters on the Discovery Channel.
On the show, prospectors usually discover small nuggets in between driving their diggers around and talking about the price of buckets.
This time, things played out a little differently, according to the BBC.
“These are definitely one of the most significant finds,” Ethan West said…
“To have two large chunks in one day is quite amazing.”
The nuggets, which have a combined weight of 3,5kg, were found following a few hours of digging with the help of West’s father.
His father is the gentleman above with the fantastic moustache.
The chunks are estimated to be valued at $350 000 (Australian Dollars), which is roughly R4,3 million, but CNN says that the nuggets could fetch up to 30% more than their estimated value by weight if they are sold to a collector.
“I reckoned we were in for a chance,” Mr Shannon told Australian TV show Sunrise. “It was in a bit of virgin ground”.
