I recently rewatched The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and I was surprised to find that it held up.
I obviously missed a lot of the nuance when watching it as a kid.
Now I can spot the ways that the show tackles a number of issues that are still relevant today, like economic inequality, sexual harassment, and black men dying at the hands of police officers in America.
With all of that in mind, it’s not that surprising that show could, in the right hands, be adapted to deal with these themes in a less comedic setting.
Forgive the inevitable reference to the theme song, but this is a story all about how the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air got flipped-turned upside down by a mock trailer that’s sparked a retelling of the classic 90s sitcom.
According to Sky News, the trailer, created by Morgan Cooper, amassed millions of views, and has now caught the attention of the OG Fresh Prince, Will Smith, who describes it as “brilliant”.
Check it out:
I was sceptical, but it really works.
Smith is now teaming up with Cooper to adapt the original sitcom into a drama series, which will be called Bel-Air.
It’s set to be a co-production between Smith’s Westbrook Studios and the original producers, Universal TV.
As if that wasn’t already a stellar team, Cooper is said to be writing the script with Chris Collins, who worked as a story editor on the critically acclaimed The Wire.
I’m with Smith on this one. It looks like it’s going to be brilliant.
