If you’re Dwayne Johnson, life is pretty damn sweet at present.
The man once known simply as ‘The Rock’ has been coining it for a while now, and he’s retained his crown as the highest-paid actor in the planet for a second year running.
Forbes, which is responsible for the ranking, bases earning estimates on data via Nielsen, ComScore, Box Office Mojo and IMDB, as well as interviews with industry insiders, with the figures below all pretax, and showing earnings between June 1, 2019, and June 1, 2020.
OK, that’s the boring stuff out of the way, so let’s start with the top five and work our way towards Dwayne.
In fifth place, we have Vin Diesel, with $54 million:
The F9 star missed out on the chance to collect a massive backend payday this year after the film’s release was pushed to April 2021. He kept the franchise embers burning by acting as producer on the animated Netflix series Fast & Furious Spy Races.
I’m sure he’ll survive with a measly $50-odd million to see him through until April next year.
Fourth is Ben Affleck, with $55 million:
After a brief hiatus, Affleck returned to the big screen this year, starring in The Way Back and Netflix’s The Last Thing He Wanted.
The bronze (but really pure gold, given his earnings) medal goes to Mark Wahlberg, with $58 million:
Wahlberg’s action comedy Spenser Confidential became Netflix’s third most-watched original film after it debuted in March. He’s also made millions producing docuseries McMillions and Wahl Street.
He really is living proof that you don’t need to have great acting talent to crush it in Hollywood.
Second place goes to Ryan Reynolds, who made $71,5 million:
Netflix’s current golden boy, Reynolds made more than $20 million a piece on Six Underground and Red Notice. In July, the streamer announced it was shelling out for a third Reynolds film, which will undoubtedly mean another eight-figure payday.
As previously mentioned, the year’s biggest earner is Dwayne Johnson, with $87,5 million (just a tick over R1,5 billion):
The Rock tops the list for the second year in a row thanks to a $23.5 million check from Netflix for upcoming film Red Notice and his successful Under Armour line Project Rock.
Celebrity Net Worth lists Johnson’s personal wealth at around $320 million, which will no doubt continue to skyrocket as he stars in future classics like Jumanji 7: Now We’re Just Cashing In and San Andreas 5: I Guess The Area Has More Fault Lines.
He does seem like a decent guy and a seriously hard worker, so props to Dwayne for the success that comes his way.
