I find it impossible to read the word ‘Nkandla’ without hearing it in Jacob Zuma’s voice.
‘Nkaaaandlaaaa’, he joked in Parliament, revelling in the fact that his corrupt deeds so enraged our citizens, as ANC members laughed along with him.
Yeah, and we’re supposed to be surprised by the feeding frenzy around the COVID-19 relief funds and ‘covidpreneurs’.
South Africans are fond of the phrase ‘sometimes, all you can do is laugh’, so it’s with that in mind that we revisit Nkandla, at least via Google Maps.
Last week, journalist Duncan McLeod pointed out that there are some interesting information pins at Zuma’s compound in KwaZulu-Natal:

I’m sure your eyes are struggling a little there, so we swung past Google Maps and took this screenshot:
No firepool, but there is a ‘baseball field’, ‘ice rink’, ‘Showerhead STD & STI vaccination centre’, and ‘planetarium’.
You’ll also be pleased to know that there are currently two Google Reviews for Nkandla, both of which are one-star.
Click on the ‘Showerhead STD & STI vaccination centre’, and you’ll see it’s listed as a nightclub. One of the reviews says that its the “home of the revolutionary superior logic HIV cure – the JZ shower”, although you “might have to wrestle Msholozi for a turn”.
We really are embracing that ‘sometimes, all you can do is laugh’ thought process, because without it, it’s tough not to feel rather deflated.
Perhaps, much like Australia this coming Friday, we need to organise a specific time for those who are gatvol of this country’s governance to stand outside their homes and let out a collective scream.
It can’t hurt.
