Good comedies are rather difficult to come by these days.
I don’t mean a comedy like Will Ferrell’s Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga that you pop on for the occasional laugh, mixed with feeling guilty about how you’re watching actual garbage, either.
Those movies serve their purpose, but it won’t go down as a classic.
Recently, Palm Springs, starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti, was well received by critics, and although it’s early days, the same can be said for Kajillionaire, which garnered some buzz at this year’s Sundance Festival.
Here’s Deadline:
Con artists Theresa (Debra Winger) and Robert (Richard Jenkins) have spent 26 years training their only daughter, Old Dollo (Evan Rachel Wood), to swindle, scam and steal at every opportunity.
“She learned to forge before she learned to write,” Pops boasts of Old Dollo. “Actually, that’s how she did learn to write.”
During a desperate, hastily conceived heist, they charm a stranger (Gina Rodriguez) into joining their next scam, only to have their entire world turned upside down.
Jeff Bezos is headed towards becoming a trillionaire by 2026, but no word on when he might become a kajllionaire, mostly because it’s an unspecified number.
Still, you’d back him.
Here’s the trailer:
IndieWire was also full of praise, calling it “one of the must-see indie films of the season”, with an “extraordinary” performance from Evan Rachel Wood.
The IMDb rating isn’t stellar, but those aren’t always to be trusted.
Kajillionaire is due for release in US theatres on September 18.
