As much as most South Africans know the bare essentials of our country’s history, what we’re taught in schools still leaves considerable gaps.
For example, you’ve heard the word ‘Vlakplaas’, but do you really understand the sheer depths of moral depravity that word denotes?
It will come as a surprise to nobody that there is a similar problem across the pond in the US, where what is taught as history varies wildly from state to state.
You would think that teaching pupils about slavery would be crucial, and central, to any history lesson about America, but seven states do not directly mention slavery in their standard history curriculum, and eight don’t mention the civil rights movement.
Nerdy Brit and Last Week Tonight host John Oliver reckons the US might be in need of a unified history lesson, especially in light of recent events on their soil.
I’m up for a lesson:
Maybe someone will do a similar video for South Africa, and certain politicians will stop talking about how there are more racist laws now than there were under apartheid.
