The most haunted house in Ireland, as it is often dubbed, was built in 1170 by Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke.
In 1350, it passed into the ownership of Raymond Le Gros, who had acquired the name Redmond because he had a reputation for being particularly violent and was often covered in blood. He named his home Redmond Hall.
After war and lineage disputes, the Loftus family moved in and the home was renamed Loftus Hall, or ‘The Hall’.
Charles Tottenham eventually became Lord of the manor (having to adopt the Loftus name to inherit lands and title as per instructions of Nicolas Loftus in 1752) by marrying the Anne Loftus, daughter of the first Viscount Loftus, and they had six children, four boys and two girls – Elizabeth and Anne.
The story goes that on a dark and stormy night in County Wexford, a man knocked on the door of the manor.
The family invited the man in, and seemed to enjoy his company.
One night, the family and the man were in the game room playing cards. A butler serving the Tottenham family at the table was just about to question the man when Anne bent down to pick another card from the floor which she must have dropped.
It is said that when Anne bent over to pick up the card, she looked beneath the table to see that the mysterious man had a cloven foot and was, therefore, the devil. She declared this to the room, at which point he shot up through the ceiling and disappeared.
Anne is rumoured to have lost her mind and locked herself in her room, and that’s where she died. Many who have spent the night in her room claim to have seen the ghostly figure of a woman walking about.
Over the years the property has changed hands countless times, although it hasn’t really been lived in for a while.
For some inexplicable reason, recent owners tried to introduce ‘glamping’ to the manor grounds, which failed miserably after their first guests drank the equivalent of a liquor store’s worth of booze and trashed the place.
We know this because Loftus Hall appeared on the Irish equivalent of Gordon Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares.
Instead of making over the business, two elderly men drive up on bicycles, take the owners to other, more successful businesses to point out all the things that they’re doing wrong, and then leave them to fend for themselves.
You can watch that, with commentary by Irish YouTuber Call Me Kevin, here.
The house also featured on a recent episode of the podcast LORE, which took a deep dive into its history.
It’s worth a listen:
Right, now that you know what you’re getting yourself into, let’s take a look at the actual property, which is once again on the market.
Per INSIDER:
When Aidan Quigley misbehaved, his parents threatened to drop him off at the haunted Loftus Hall. It was a common threat tossed around Wexford County, Ireland.
The 22-bedroom mansion has a lengthy track record of hauntings, starting with the legend of Anne Tottenham.
In 2011, Quigley’s childhood threat became a reality. At 38 years old, Quigley and his brother, Shane, purchased Loftus Hall.
Over the past nine years, they’ve done what they can with the old mansion and feel that it’s time to let it go.
Quigley said he’s been in contact with a few interested buyers. He joked that he’s looking for a Charlie from “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” By that, he means someone who shares the same vision as him.
“I’m looking for the kid who doesn’t steal the Gobstoppers,” he said. “It’s the person who gets it. Because if you get it, you look after the place and you bring it forward.”
As I’m sure you’ve figured out by now, it’s a private sale. You’d have to contact the owners directly.
They won’t be charging extra for the ghosts.
To finish, here’s a paranormal investigation of the property from 2011, with a suitably ominous soundtrack to boot:
