Johnny Depp is currently involved in a libel case against UK tabloid rag, The Sun, which published a 2018 story that labelled Depp a “wife beater”.
Perhaps there were stages when the couple, pictured above, were happy together, but those times may have been few and far between.
I have nothing against those who sue The Sun, but Depp must have known that the case was going to descend into a no holds barred look at his relationship with Amber Heard, and it’s not shown either party in a very favourable light.
The last time we covered this one, there was talk of “sperm on the pillows”, and let’s go to the Telegraph for a look at what happened on day eight:
Mr Depp’s head of security for 14 years claimed Ms Heard was violent to him on multiple occasions, with his security team having to protect him from her abusive behaviour. Sean Bett told the hearing that Ms Heard’s abuse of her husband became a “recurring cycle” during their relationship.
He said: “Throughout the course of Mr Depp and Ms Heard’ s relationship, Ms Heard was verbally and physically abusive towards Mr Depp. On many occasions, I witnessed her shout at Mr Depp. I was also told by Mr Depp on multiple occasions that Ms Heard had physically abused him.
“A very common occurrence throughout the relationship would be that Mr Depp would have me, and other members of his security team, take him away from Ms Heard due to her behaviour.”
The court was shown a number of photographs taken by Mr Bett of injuries to Mr Depp allegedly caused by Ms Heard, including one showing a red mark to his cheek taken in March 2015 and another, showing a scratch and reddening around his nose, taken in December 2015.
Bett, who is a former officer at Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, said things would often escalate into violence after Heard would drink “large quantities of red wine”, adding that he had seen Heard “throwing bottles, glasses and other objects” at Depp, who he claimed would remain “passive” during these exchanges.
Depp’s former partners, Winona Ryder and Vanessa Paradis, both gave statements in his defence, saying the actor had never been violent towards either during their relationships.
Via Vanity Fair, the court also heard a rather odd story from a security guard for the former couple’s building, Starling Jenkins, who worked on the night of Heard’s 30th birthday party.
Yes, the same night Heard is alleged to have defecated in their bed as a “harmless prank.
Here’s Jenkins recounting how he retrieved Depp’s phone on that night, after Heard allegedly threw it out of the window:
…Jenkins, said in a witness statement that he located the phone through the Find My iPhone app with Heard’s help, after she told him that she had thrown it out the window. An unhoused man said he had it.
Jenkins wrote, “He returned the phone to me in exchange for the following: (1) US$425; (2) three chicken tacos; (3) two bags of chips; (4) two apples; and (5) four bottles of water.”
Jenkins said he drove Heard and some friends to Coachella the next day, and that she threw up in his car at least once. He got her crackers and ginger ale.
You’re a brave person if you decide to go to Coachella the day after your 30th birthday. That’s around the time your hangovers take the next step, and become so horrid you’re forced to evaluate whether or not it’s worth having ‘just one more’.
I think we’ll leave it there for now.
Don’t worry, I’m sure there are plenty of messy details still to come.
