Everyone has a skeleton or two in their closet, but whoever married Ghislaine Maxwell must have known what she stands accused of.
After all, allegations of her organising, aiding, and participating in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse and sex trafficking operations have been known since the early 1990s.
On Tuesday, Maxwell was denied bail during a teary video appearance before US District Judge Alison Nathan in Manhattan.
Prosecutors say she presents a great flight risk, and the FBI would agree, so the denial of bail didn’t come as a huge surprise.
The fact that Maxwell is actually married did, reports the Guardian:
Prosecutors made the revelation on Tuesday when arguing that Maxwell should be detained pending trial.
Maxwell, who had asked for release on a $5m bond co-signed by six people, was ultimately denied bail. Maxwell pleaded not guilty to the charges.
They also said Maxwell had “declined” to identify her spouse to court officials.
“In addition to failing to describe in any way the absence of proposed co-signers of a bond, the defendant also makes no mention whatsoever about the financial circumstances or assets of her spouse whose … identity she declined to provide to pretrial services,” assistant US attorney Alison Moe told Judge Alison Nathan.
“There is no information about who will be co-signing this bond or their assets and no details whatsoever.”
The video feed of her court appearance did see the odd audio glitch, so it was only when the transcripts became available on Wednesday night that the media caught wind of the development.
In addition to the news of her mystery marriage, other details of Maxwell’s personal life were also discussed:
A real estate agent involved with the property’s sale told an FBI agent that the buyers introduced themselves as “Scott and Janet Marshall, who both have British accents”.
“Scott Marshall told her that the … that he was retired from the British military and he was currently working on writing a book. Janet Marshall described herself as a journalist who wants privacy. They told the agent they wanted to purchase the property [below] quickly through a wire and that they were setting up an LLC,” Moe said, noting that this conversation took place in November 2019.
“Following [Maxwell’s] arrest, the real estate agent saw a photograph of [Maxwell] in the media and realized that the person who had introduced herself as Janet Marshall … was the defendant, Ghislaine Maxwell.”
That, or the real estate agent wanted the commission, and sold the property to Maxwell and her spouse anyway, pleading ignorance later once the money was banked.
As was to be expected, the guessing game as to Maxwell’s husband soon began.
The New York Post reckons it may be British tech CEO Scott Borgerson, with reports last year suggesting she was hiding out in his Massachusetts property.
Borgerson (pictured below) is believed to have met Maxwell in 2015, through speaking engagements connected to ocean preservation.
The estate agent said that the male buyer, ‘Scott Marshall’, claimed to have retired from the British military, and Borgerson did spend four years in the US Coast Guard, as both a commanding officer and navigator.
When asked last August about a potential relationship with Maxwell, he publicly denied that was the case.
Forbes has gone one better, listing everyone Maxwell is reported to have dated over the years, including Epstein, who she dated around 1992:
Gateway computer founder Ted Waitt and Maxwell dated around 2005, and broke up around 2011 or 2012, but not before Maxwell attended former first daughter Chelsea Clinton’s July 2010 wedding as Waitt’s guest…
Maxwell was reportedly in a “serious relationship” prior to 1992 with the late Italian aristocrat and millionaire Count Gianfranco Cicogna, a businessman and stunt pilot who died in a 2012 plane crash.
Maxwell’s father, publishing giant Robert Maxwell, died under mysterious circumstances in late 1991, and it’s presumed that he fell overboard whilst out yachting on ‘Lady Ghislaine’, the boat he had named for his daughter.
Getting some strong Carole Baskin vibes here.
