My baking skills are questionable at best, and potentially dangerous at worst, if that last batch of brownies is anything to go on.

If someone hurled one of those things at an unsuspecting bystander it would maim them.

So, I put down the scale and measuring cups, much to the relief of my partner, our oven, and the neighbours.

For the more gifted, however, baked goods have become a soothing pastime during the pandemic, and if you stay away from social media you can probably convince yourself that you’d win The Great British Bake Off given half the chance.

Scroll through social media and you’ll discover that there’s always someone out there who can put you to shame, and those people are making cakes that look like things that should never be cake.

In doing so, they have ripped the sacred fabric of society by making us question our very existence.
