We’ve finally reached the end of more than four days of Johnny Depp’s evidence in his libel case against The Sun.
He is suing the tabloid for allegedly writing a defamatory article claiming that he abused his former wife, Amber Heard.
At this point, it’s honestly unclear who abused who. Both of them seem like deeply flawed people, who were involved in a seriously toxic relationship that brought out the worst in them both.
Let’s unpack some of the latest outlandish stories that came out on the stand, with Sky News.
In his final day of giving evidence at the High Court, Depp claimed he lost $650m when former business managers “stole” his money.
He also denied allegations of violence towards ex-wife Amber Heard during their honeymoon, at Thanksgiving in 2015 and after her 30th birthday party in 2016.
Later in the day, the court heard more about Depp’s party lifestyle, complete with a picture supplied by Heard of a night she didn’t think that Depp would remember.
Here he is, allegedly passed out, holding melting ice cream:
Right, on to the mandatory breakdown of the weirdest stuff that came out during cross-examination:
According to IOL, Depp said that everything that Heard had accused him of was a “reverse confession”.
“It seemed everything she accused me of was something she had done to me,” he said.
Audio played in a court hearing on July 10 revealed a conversation from July 2016 where Depp asked Heard to cut him with a knife (around the 57-second mark). He also asks housekeeping to leave because there is “sperm on the pillows”:
Everyone has thus far glossed over the fact that these two seem to have recorded most of their conversations.
Who does that?
Now that Depp has said his piece, Heard is expected to give evidence in court on Friday.
We can expect more sordid details of their marriage in the weeks to come.
I’ll never be able to watch another Tim Burton movie again.
